Secularism, as a concept has evolved through ages In order to study the evolution of secularism, the present paper examines the history of Indian Political thought to find out what, if any, was the role and nature of secularism in India, In Ancient India the role of religion was immense. Most of the Hindu scriptures show that the king in ancient India was strongly tied to religion. Secularism as a concept never existed in India. It is of Western origin.
