They tried to reform the social system to solve the problem of untouchability. The depressed caste movements were also called as protest movement started with the aim of establishing a classless society which was pre-condition for true nationalism. They also tried to create an alternative socio-cultural structure by conversion to some other religion or by acquiring education, economic status and political power.
