Article Name : | | GENDER IMBALANCE IN HARYANA: A STUDY | Author Name : | | Anjana Nagpal | Publisher : | | Ashok Yakkaldevi | Article Series No. : | | GRT-5566 | Article URL : | | | Author Profile View PDF In browser | Abstract : | | Prime Minister, Narender Modi, chose Haryana to launch his nationwide campaign of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ in January this year. Unfortunately, it’s not a feather in the cap as Haryana was chosen for this ‘campaign for saving the girl child’, for having one of the worst sex ratio and child sex ratio in the country. The census of 2011 recorded 827 females for every 1000 males in Haryana. The child sex ratio was equally saddening at 830 number of girls per 1000 boys between 0 to 6 years of age. What is even more alarming is the fact that Haryana is otherwise amongst the economically most progressive states. The persistently declining sex ratio in Haryana has reached the level of a crisis which will have far reaching social and economic consequences. | Keywords : | | |
